It's been a while. So, let me say hello and happy middle of the year. This would be a good time to write about a word that floats around fluidly for some. That word that would be fighting words when I was much younger.
Bitch.
I was never a female who thought it was cool to refer to another female as such. The women in my family did not address one another that way. And my generation was not about to start a new tradition. I wouldn't be here today to share my story if we tried.
So, it was foreign for me to hear that from outsiders. It wasn't often, but I was perplexed when it did. Let me tell you a funny story about the time a manager described me as such.
Some years back, I worked for a staffing agency. On one particular day, a disturbed young lady entered the building and refused to leave, even after several failed attempts by her family. The child was chilling at a coworker's desk, okay. Posted like a tree planted by water. While this was taking place, I was on my lunch break. Once I returned, I could tell
the room had an awkward feeling.
So, upon my return, I noticed some employees staring back at me, saying, "She won't leave." But their eyes say, "Do something." I did something. I was known for not being timid by the characters in that neighborhood.
I got out of my seat, walked toward the young lady, and motioned for her to get up while I pointed to the door. She left without a word.
Done.
The story was shared with the area manager at a staff dinner. Her initial reply was, "You're a bitch; I would have waited til she left to say something." Excuse me? I politely responded that that's not how I roll. This was a staffing agency, not an adult daycare. Someone needed to take charge, and I was the lady for the job.
I almost received that uncomfortable feeling in my chest when I heard, bitch. But, I dismissed it with the quickness. I know people will resent you for doing something they can't do. So, I've come to terms that if speaking up makes me a bitch, crown me Redman, and I'll be dat, I'll be dat.
I have more bitch stories to come, but until then, speak up!
Be safe and be great!
